Facebook Introduces Ticker And Top News Feed

As expected Facebook introduced some more features to take the user experience to next level. New Updates includes improvements over News Feed and introduction of Ticker.

Some very interesting updates were released from Facebook today, following the lines of Smart Lists and Subscribe feature.

Mark Tonkelowitz, Facebook introduced details of the new features to the users.

"Starting today, it will be easier to keep up with the people in your life no matter how frequently or infrequently you're on Facebook."

News Feed Updates
According to Mark, New News Feed will act more like your own personal newspaper. Introduction of top and interesting stories is what it points to. Now whenever you log in you will see all the Top and interesting stories at the top of the page. They're marked with an easy-to-spot blue corner.

If you don't Log-in that regularly in your account, this feature will remind you of all the top stories you might want to see so that you don't miss out anything important from your friends.
And if you Log-in regularly to your account you will find "recent stories" at top of the page.

If you see something that you don't like as top stories, hover over the right side, click the arrow and click 'Unmark as top story' from the menu.

New Ticker Feature
Facebook introduced a new real-time side bar for information flow from your friends.
It brings your conversations to life by displaying updates instantaneously, when an update is live on Ticker you can then join the conversation right away with your friends.

There is a grey slider bar on right corner of Ticker to adjust according to screen.

These updates are an attempt to make conversation more interactive on Facebook, as we see in Google+. Ticker can prove to be a great add-on for Facebook. We are waiting for feedback from users.

Do provide us some feedback.

Facebook To Be Banned in Pakistan

Pakistan, to ban the American Social Network giant Facebook again due to spread of religious hatred on internet, reports Pakistan Today.

"The Lahore High Court Justice Sh Azmat Saeed on Monday ordered ministry of information and technology to block access to all websites in Pakistan especially American social networking website “Facebook”, spreading religious hatred on internet and to submit a compliance report by October 6", reports Pakistan Today.

The is order was issued after hearing the petition filed by Muhammad & Ahmad, a public interest litigation firm, for hosting competition featuring blasphemous caricatures. They filed the petition seeking for a permanent ban on access to Facebook for hosting a fresh blasphemous caricature drawing contest world over under a title "2nd Annual Draw Muhammad Day-May 20, 2011".

The main aim for ban is to protect the Islamic values and feeling of billions of Muslims.

No action will be taken against companies like Google, court clarified.

The lifting of ban has not been specified by the court. So we can't say for how long the people of Pakistan won't be able to access one of the most popular social networking website "Facebook".

Facebook The Breakaway Brand

Facebook, One of the most popular Social Networking site is Listed as Top Breakaway Brand for 2011 with a growth rate of 195%.

Landor, Strategic Brand Consulting services released a list of "Breakaway Brands of 2011" in which Facebook tops the chart with a growth rate of 195% for 2007-2010.

Other Brands that are on list are Skype, YouTube, Netflix, Samsung, Apple, iTunes, Amazon, Reese's and National Guard.

This list may not be necessarily based on earnings of the brand. Based more on how a brand has gained a consistent strength over time.

Brand strength is determined using three years of consumer survey data from the BrandAsset Valuator (BAV) U.S. database.

Landor Associates, in the article published,

"This year, our list of top Breakaway Brands reflects these generational extremes, comprising both the contemporary and the classic. Some of the Breakaway Brands on our list are a blast from the past, yet they remain relevant in today’s fast-moving world. The other brands are straight from the future and until recently were just young upstarts, but now they’ve become part of the new American brandscape."

Here is the list of Breakaway brands of 2011 from Landor

Many figures released this year showing the increase in popularity of Facebook and how it is growing day by day. The list reflects the same image of Facebook. The growth is huge, after Facebook Skype is ranked second with growth rate of 79%, less than half of Facebook.

Skype ranked second in the list, shows the "Call Giant" is also doing well in the market. Skype recently purchased GroupMe, a group messaging service to gain more strength for its services.

Ranked third is "YouTube", before YouTube there was no easy way to share video online. Now anyone can upload, comment on, and share videos easily. And Google’s purchase of the site underlines its legitimacy as an online video leader.

Netflix is next, and came as a big surprise for us. Netflix has redefined the entertainment category emerging as one of the popular TV shows & movies streaming service.

Apple, iTunes and Samsung was some other brands to look out in the list with marginal difference of growth rate between them.

Landor, also released a list of Five Brands to watch out for in coming time.

What are your views on this list? Any of your favorite brand that you were looking for is not on list. Do share your views with us.

Cheers,
Team

Facebook Introduces New Subscribe Button

Some more updates have been released by Facebook for Customizing the News Feed for your account, new feature introduced is "Subscribe Button".

Again with the feature we get the feel and measure of Google+ features. Some similar actions can be performed in Google+.

Zach Rait, Facebook, on a post on the official blog introduced this feature to users and said,

"Until now, it hasn't been easy to choose exactly what you see in your News Feed. Maybe you don't want to see every time your brother plays a game on Facebook, for example. Or maybe you'd like to see more stories from your best friends, and fewer from your coworkers."

New Subscribe Button will make things easy and more customizable for user. User can now choose what to read in News feed and what not to.

Main features of Subscribe button:

Choose what you see from people in News Feed
You can now choose from "All updates", "Most updates" and "Important updates only."

Subscribe to People or Public figures Not on Friend List
Powers you to hear from people(not friends) like journalists, artists and political figures.

Post as Public
People who subscribed you will get to see your posts shared as Public in their News Feeds.

With the new Subscribe button we again feel the touch of G+ involved in overall features. Like Post as Public in G+ can be viewed by your followers. Now this feature will be available for Facebook users as well. The new News Feed Update is also very similar to Circles of G+.

Must Read | Facebook Releases Improved Friends Lists Update

Although thought is same, in case of Facebook we can expect more enhancements. As we can mentioned in previous post as well, functions look like similar but with advanced features.

Facebook Releases Improved Friends Lists Update

To make Friend lists incredibly easy to manage, Facebook has just released three major improvements in friend list:

1. Smart lists

2. Close Friends and Acquaintances lists

3. Better suggestions.

Blake Ross, Facebook, in an official post on their bog revealed about the new features.
He wrote,

"This week, it will be easier than ever to see more from the people you care about and simpler to share with exactly the right people using Friend Lists."

Looks like we will witness something very similar what we use in Google+. Google+ powers users with such feature with which you can see post from a particular circle, share with them, and perform some closed activities.

Facebook has the feature of managing friend list from years, but for most of users it was meaningless as it does not have enough functionality and also consumes a lot of time.

Lets first look what's new in Facebook:

Details about the new feature[via official post]:
1. Smart Lists - You'll see smart lists that create themselves and stay up-to-date based on profile info your friends have in common with you--like your work, school, family and city.
In Initial stages Facebook is offering some smart lists as Work, School, Family and City.

For instance you have Cambridge University as your college and some of your friends also have same college then a list named "Cambridge University" will automatically be added as one of your smart list. After that you can also add and remove friends manually.

2. Close Friends and Acquaintances lists - You can see your best friends' photos and posts in one place, and see less from people you're not as close to. Similar functionality goes for Acquaintances lists.

3. Better suggestions - New feature provides suggestions for your smart lists, Close Friends, Acquaintances, and your own lists, making them easier to create and update. While adding a user as your friend, you'll be able to add the friend to any of your existing lists.

Now every list will be having its own news feed where you can find updates from your friends that are in that list. Similarly you can share your updates with a group of friends via same smart list.

Improved Friend lists will be available to everyone this week.

As many of the Google+ users must have noticed this feature completely looks like "Circles" of Google+. Similar functionality is available and benchmark of G+. Now all Facebook lovers will be able to use some similar kind of functionality.

Also Read | Facebook Testing New Summary Email Feature

This kind of move from Facebook clearly suggests that it does not want any of its user to move from their platform simply because some other platform is providing some good features. Like in this case its Google+. One major difference between Circles of Google+ and new Facebook feature is that automatic functionality of addition is involved in Facebook Smart lists.
But question is what all features will be added like this? Don't you think users like and appreciate something new.

Facebook Mark Zuckerberg Success Story - A Motivation

Biography - Mark Zuckerberg

As we all know Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is an American computer programmer and Internet entrepreneur. He is best known for co-creating the social networking site Facebook, today we look closely in his life and his success story.

Zuckerberg was born in 1984 in White Plains, New York to Karen, a psychiatrist, and Edward Zuckerberg, a dentist. He and his three sisters, Randi, Donna, and Arielle, were brought up in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Interest in Programming

Zuckerberg showed signs of intelligence from an early age, and, in particular, an interest in programming. An unusual hobby it may seem, the New York born Mark found himself spending his spare time developing different kinds of computer programs, with a particular emphasis on communication channels.

School Days

During Zuckerberg's high school years, under the company name Intelligent Media Group, he built a music player called the Synapse Media Player that used artificial intelligence to learn the user's listening habits, which was posted to Slashdot and received a rating of 3 out of 5 from PC Magazine. Microsoft and AOL tried to purchase Synapse and recruit Zuckerberg, but he chose instead to enroll at Harvard University in September 2002.

Harvard University Life - COLLEGE WHIZZKID

He moved to California, inspired by another Harvard dropout, Bill Gates, and the Ivy League college's policy of allowing students to take indefinite leave.
By the time he began classes at Harvard, he had already achieved a "reputation as a programming prodigy," notes Vargas.
In the second year, he built a program “CourseMatch”, where you go online and can see what courses your friends are taking.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A short time later, he created a different program he initially called Facemash that let students select the best looking person from a choice of photos. According to Zuckerberg's roommate at the time, Arie Hasit, "he built the site for fun."
The site went up over a weekend, but by Monday morning the college shut it down because its popularity had overwhelmed Harvard's server and prevented students from accessing the Internet. In addition, many students complained that their photos were being used without permission. Zuckerberg apologized publicly, and the student paper ran articles stating that his site was "completely improper.

Creation of “thefacebook.com
Students requested to the administration that university should develop an internal website that would include similar photos and contact details so that students can find about each other. According to sources, “Mark heard these plans and decided that if the university won’t do something about it, he will, and he would build a site that would be even better than what the university had planned”

Originally called thefacebook.com, Facebook was founded Mark Zuckerberg on Feb.4, 2004 with some financial help from his friend Eduardo Saverin.
In the initial stages of development the site was purely for students at Harvard, but Zuckerberg and his companions saw the potential for it to become increasingly widespread, and so made the decision to make it available to other students. These were other US universities at first, with the most recognizable being Yale, but again, the site escaped these boundaries until it became the social utility that anyone can sign-up to in today's world.

In August 2005, thefacebook was officially called Facebook and the domain facebook.com was purchased for a reported $200,000.

Facebook launched a high-school version in September 2005, which Zuckerberg called the next logical step.At that time, high-school networks required an invitation to join. Facebook later expanded membership eligibility to employees of several companies, including Apple Inc. and Microsoft. Facebook was then opened on September 26, 2006, to everyone of age 13 and older with a valid email address.

It is widely accepted that there are many risks associated with entrepreneurship, and Zuckerberg is no stranger to this. Following the launch of the 'News Feed' on September 5th, 2006, many were quick to voice their concerns about people being able to cyberstalk others - something which deserves to an entry in the Mark Zuckerberg biography on the basis that taking chances is something budding entrepreneurs must adapt to.

In May 2007, Mark set-up Facebook platform, something which enables social applications to be created within Facebook and therefore hosts great appeal to developers. Recent statistics show that there are 800,000 active developers using this spin-off service worldwide.

On October 24, 2007, Microsoft announced that it had purchased a 1.6% share of Facebook for $240 million, giving Facebook a total implied value of around $15 billion. Microsoft's purchase included rights to place international ads on Facebook. In October 2008, Facebook announced that it would set up its international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. In September 2009, Facebook said that it had turned cash-flow positive for the first time. In November 2010, based on SecondMarket Inc., an exchange for shares of privately held companies, Facebook's value was $41 billion (slightly surpassing eBay's) and it became the third largest US web company after Google and Amazon. Facebook has been identified as a possible candidate for an IPO by 2013.

Traffic to Facebook increased steadily after 2009. More people visited Facebook than Google for the week ending March 13, 2010.

In March 2011 it was reported that Facebook removes approximately 20,000 profiles from the site every day for various infractions, including spam, inappropriate content and underage use, as part of its efforts to boost cyber security.

In early 2011, Facebook announced plans to move to its new headquarters, the former Sun Microsystems campus in Menlo Park, California.

Release of statistics by DoubleClick showed that Facebook reached one trillion pageviews in the month of June 2011, making it the most visited website in the world. It should however be noted that Google and some of its selected websites are not counted in the DoubleClick rankings.

Controversies
As we all know controversies are part of success. Mark too faced many controversies in early years, some of them were legal controversies. Later all cases filed was dismissed.

Awards
In 2010, Zuckerberg was named Time magazine's Person of the Year. As of 2011, his personal wealth was estimated to be $13.5 billion.

Zuckerberg has been portrayed as a detached, cold and calculating internet visionary in the Golden Globe award-winning film The Social Network; however the accuracy of several incidents has been disputed. Recently, Zuckerberg became a signatory to The Giving Pledge, committing to donate most of his wealth to philanthropic causes.
He is said to be one of the youngest self made billionaire.

Best Decision
Going open source in 2007. This allowed anyone to create applications for Facebook users, providing a much enhanced service to Facebook users.

Some inspirational words from him:

"I'm trying to make the world a more open place."
- Mark Zuckerberg

Lets admire and inspire from one of the Perfectionist and learn from his desire to push the boundaries.

Here are some of his interview videos:

Bigger, Faster Photos from Facebook

'Facebook' released an update to its photo app, making it to work faster and bigger images.

Sharing and tagging photos is one of the most popular activities on Facebook. As we have seen Facebook is constantly working on making Photos better and for the same reason they introduced some improvements to the way you experience photos.

Justin Shaffer posted in their blog 'Bigger, Faster Photos' and mentioned "Now, the photos you share on Facebook are bigger (720 pixels to 960 pixels) and load twice as fast, giving you quicker access to more detailed images. Photos you've already uploaded to your profile will also be displayed at this higher resolution."

He also pointed out that the new photo viewer will be more streamlined that features a cleaner interface that makes it even easier to enjoy your photos. The light box is now set against a simple white background that puts more of the focus on the photo, and less on the surrounding frame."

These features will be rolled out for everyone gradually.

Chris Cox announced the information in a post on Facebook blog.

He said "Today we're announcing a bunch of improvements that make it easier to share posts, photos, tags and other content with exactly the people you want. You have told us that "who can see this?" could be clearer across Facebook, so we have made changes to make this more visual and straightforward. The main change is moving most of your controls from a settings page to being inline, right next to the posts, photos and tags they affect. Plus there are several other updates here that will make it easier to understand who can see your stuff (or your friends') in any context. Here's what's coming up, organized around two areas: what shows up on your profile, and what happens when you share something new."

New features will provided users profile some new tools that give you clearer, more consistent controls over how photos and posts get added to it, and who can see everything that lives there.

Main Highlights include

1. Inline Profile Controls
The inline menu lets you know who can see this part of your profile, and you can change it with one click. More information about controls click here.

3. Content Tag Review

Facebook Releases New Features On Left-side Naviagtion Bar

Facebook Today has started the update to their left side navigation bar which improves user experience with enhanced bookmarks and notifications for Pages, Groups and Apps.

The Updates were announced last week officially on Facebook developer blog Making Apps on Facebook more engaging and social by Bruce Rogers.

The new version of the navigation is divided into four groups: Favorites, Pages, Groups and Apps. Favorites includes direct links to popular Facebook features such as News Feed or Events. The Pages and Groups sections each list the two most popular Pages and Groups you use, along with a notifications number to the right-hand side. Game Requests and App Requests look almost identical to the previous version of the navigation menu.

Improvements on Homepage Bookmark

Update provides the number and order of bookmarks in the groups and apps section dynamic for each user. Update also added the ability to add bookmarks to a “Favorites” section which appears at the top of all bookmarks to make it even easier for users to get back to the apps and games that they love.

Quality Distribution

Bruce Says "Our goal with News Feed is to surface the most relevant stories to users from their friends, including high quality content from apps. We’ve begun rolling out a new ranking system that better surfaces app stories to the people who will most likely to engage with it, including those who don’t already use the app. Apps that post stream content which results in high user engagement will see more impressions for their stories. Conversely apps whose content is frequently hidden or marked as spam will see lower impressions. You should focus on publishing higher quality content and track user interaction in the Insights Dashboard to optimize for this system."

This update has restructured Facebook navigation menu. Do you like it?

Facebook to be destroyed on Nov. 5, says Anonymous Hacker Group

Notorious hacker collective Anonymous on Tuesday threatened to “kill” Facebook on Nov. 5, according to a YouTube video spotlighted on official channels used by the group.

“Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed,” the group wrote in a transcript of its YouTube video. “If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook [sic] for the sake of your own privacy.”

Anonymous claims it is doing Facebook users a service because the company is “selling information to government agencies.” It also asserts that Facebook’s privacy controls are a joke and that users cannot actually delete their accounts.

“Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your ‘privacy’ settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you ‘delete’ your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time,” the group wrote. “Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more ‘private’ is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family.”

Nov. 5 is Guy Fawkes Day, which commemorates when Fawkes and others placed explosives under the British House of Lords in 1605. The likeness of Guy Fawkes is used commonly used by Anonymous as a symbol and hackers from the group wore Fawkes masks at the Defcon hacker conference last week (as pictured above). The Fawkes mask and story was popularized in the ten-issue comic series V for Vendetta and the movie based upon it.

The @YourAnonNews Twitter account appeared to confirm that the video was issued by Anonymous, with a tweet on Tuesday night stating: “Remember remember the fifth of November the FaceBook treason and plot…”

The threat to destroy Facebook comes only a day after the group successfully hacked and defaced the Syrian Ministry of Defense’s website. Anonymous has gained much exposure in the last year with attacks on PayPal, Visa, Amazon, Bank of America, and various world governments. The group was blamed for the massive attack on Sony’s PlayStation Network, but it denied involvement.

Even though Anonymous has had success in hacking some major websites in the past, it’s questionable that it would be successful against Facebook. When you consider that the hacking group has given Facebook several months to prepare for an attack, it’s extremely unlikely Facebook would be brought down. But when you’re talking about a group of hackers with an aim to sow discord, you can never be certain.

Latest update as on 15.8.2011:
@OP_Facebook tweeted this clarification about "Operation Facebook":
"ok im making one thing clear here, We Cant Take Facebook Down...Yet. This is an awareness campaign and spreading the word is good enough."

So, what do you think??
what was the earlier message all about? Is this their new trick??
Doesn't seem so, as they fight for users, not against users.

Facebook Messenger App now available for iPhone and Android

Facebook released a brand new (separate) app, called Facebook Messenger for the iPhone and Android devices. It combines all of your messages into a single app and can be used to text your Facebook buddies via your profile or text message, via your carrier.

The app works on iOS 4.0 or higher versions on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. On Android, the Messenger works on Android 2.2 Froyo or higher.

Because Facebook Messenger is a stand-alone application, the user will have to log into it separately. This app also provides integration with the Address Book on the device and thus lets the user chat on Facebook. In a way, Facebook Messenger app being cross-platform from day one is going to give competition to BlackBerry Messenger app iMessage on iOS devices, and several WhatsApp-like messengers.

Facebook Messenger aims to give you a better way of reaching your friends and contacts by unifying your entire correspondence with everyone (social network friends, email and phone contacts) into one single app. The Facebook Messenger is an extension of the Facebook messages service and you can send messages to your online friends, but you can also send texts to your acquaintances the regular SMS way.

Starting up the app brings you to a list, consisting of all your Facebook messages. To write a message to someone you just tap the compose icon in the top right corner and start typing the person’s name. If a person has more than one number to his/hers contact details the app prompts you to select which number to use. You can, naturally, just select Facebook messages and send an online message.

Besides chat, the hidden code in the app reveals that Facebook Messenger is capable of video chat as well. Now, that would really make the best of devices that have front facing cameras.

At this moment, Facebook Messenger is not available worldwide, but it is expected to be available globally in sometime.
